The Complete Maus: A Survivor's Tale by Art Spiegelman

It’s not often that I pick a comic that wrapped up more than thirty years ago but given recent events I, like many others, felt the need to pull my copy off the shelf and give it a read. Maus is an iconic work in graphic novels; important not only as one of the first widely respected graphic works in English but also for its subject. Maus weaves two tales together. The tale within the tale is of Art Spiegelman’s father Vladek and his family’s experiences leading up to and during World War II, and ultimately with their incarceration in Nazi concentration camps. But, the framing tale is Spiegelman’s troubled relationship with his father and ultimately how trauma is passed along generationally. Maus is a powerful and foundational work in comics.

Sakamoto Days, Vol. 1
by Yuto Suzuki

Taro Sakamoto was once a legendary hit man feared and respected by all, but one day he mysteriously quit and got married. Now he’s a pudgy convenience store owner with a wife and a kid enjoying the happy days of retirement.  Naturally, this can’t last and Taro is once again dragged back into the dangerous life of the paid assassin. Sakamoto Days is a fun, comedy manga that doesn’t get bogged down in seriousness even in heaviest action.
