“Bowerman and the Men of Oregon: The Story of Oregon's Legendary Coach and Nike's Cofounder"
by Kenny Moore

"Bowerman and the Men of Oregon is a brilliant re-creation of a large, quintessentially American life. During his 24-year tenure as track coach at the University of Oregon, Bill Bowerman won four national team titles and his athletes set 13 world and 22 American records, most notably by distance runner Steve Prefontaine (subject of the film Without Limits, available on dvd VRN #76705 with the Bowerman role played by Donald Sutherland with obvious relish and glee). Bowerman also co-founded Nike, invented the waffle sole, helped usher in the running boom to non-athletes in the late 60s, and was the U.S. Track & Field Coach at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Two time Olympian Kenny Moore, who had been coached by Bowerman, has written a hugely captivating account that takes the reader from The Oregon Trail, through WWII, the drama of the Munich hostage taking, the rise of Nike, and even includes self styled guru Bhagwan Rajneesh's move to Oregon. It is truly a sprawling read for anyone that enjoys biography." ...Ron Stadnik

"Before I Die"
by Jenny Downham

I listened to Tessa’s story. I will buy it in print to savour some of the writing, it is that superb. Tessa’s first person narrative is perfect for audio and Charlotte Parry’s performance is mesmerizing. Teenage girls love stories that make them cry, and they will find none better. .

Halfway through grade 11, Amal decides to wear her hijab full-time. Randa Abdel-Fattah avoids bogging down her book with didactic passages – as can happen with issue novels. "Seven Second Surgery"
by Faber Drive

Last year, when Mission, B.C.'s Faber Drive decided to submit a song to 99.3 The Fox's Battle of the Bands, they weren't even sure they were good enough to enter. In fact, when frontman Dave Faber took his band's CD to the station on the deadline day for submissions, he nearly gave up and went back home. "I actually got back in my car and pulled away," he says. "Then I decided to go back, so I turned the car around and I got up in the office just before it closed and handed in the disc."

It turned out to be the best move of the band's career. Out of more than 500 submissions, the Vancouver radio station chose the song "Sex and Love" as one of the 20 best. The song was played on the radio in a head to head competition against the other qualifiers and soon Faber Drive (then called Faber) was in the top 10. After live competitions at local clubs, they won first place and were voted the best band in Vancouver.

Listening to Seven Second Surgery, it's easy to see why. When I first heard "Second Chance", I knew I had to get the album. It's a great listen! Other favourite songs on the album include "Tongue Tied" and "Summer Fades to Fall"

"The Lives of Others"

The Lives of Others is most certainly a well-deserved Academy Award Winner for Best Foreign Language Film. I not only found it to be very informative (Communist East Germany in the 80s), but also captivating. The film opens in 1984 in East Berlin, where we see Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Mühe), a captain with the East German secret police, teaching a class in extreme interrogation techniques.

The real intrigue begins when Wiesler is assigned to bug and monitor the apartment of successful writer, Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch), and his girlfriend, a famous stage actress. Let the suspense and intrigue begin……. Duncan Hamilton
