"A Perfect Getaway"

This smart, suspenseful thriller starring Timothy Olyphant, Steve Zahn and Milla Jovovich is, like the title, the perfect movie getaway on a hot summer day. Newlywed hikers on Hawaii learn there's a serial killer couple on the loose and paranoia in paradise ensues.

"Star Trek"

As a kid (not too long ago, hee hee) I would run home from school to ensure that I didn't miss the next episode of Star Trek. So, as I began watching this new rendition of what I consider to be one of the best Science Fiction sagas ever produced, I was unsure of how I would receive it.

Wow, I was not disappointed. Although the story line was similar to others I loved the youthful new fresh look of the characters. Liam Lacey of The Globe and Mail said it best: “Smart and youthful, with a well-balanced package of humour, romance, crisp action, and character-based drama, Star Trek gives popcorn movies a good name."

"The Hangover"

Also, as a side note, the movie The Hangover is definitely worth a look. It’s one of those movies that if you're in a silly mood you will love. When I watched it, I was in one of those moods.

Very funny, especially Zach Galifianakis's character, Alan.

"Gran Torino"

Well, it’s been a while since my last favorites’ pick; I must be hard to please, however, I have found one. Gran Torino, which I expected to be the same old Clint Eastwood tough-guy movie, yet I found myself drawn to his character (Walt Kowalski) as he tries to shed his “hard ass” exterior and make peace with his past. Well acted throughout by all players, this film (not movie) was both entertaining and socially thought-provoking.

"Real Time"

Well, it's been a while since I submitted a review.  Obviously I have not seen too many films that I have loved, but I have finally come across a film worthy of my stamp of approval. Real Time is a low budget Canadian film starring Randy Quaid alongside a young and upcoming Canadian Jay Baruchel ,whose credits include Tropic Thunder and Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist.

Real Time is about a hit man (Quaid) who gives a compulsive gambler (Baruchel) only one hour to live.  The movie takes place in real time and its ultimate subject is what to do with the time we have in the world.  Extremely thought provoking

"Gone Baby Gone"

I must admit I have been remiss in offering a ‘faves’ pick recently, but honestly, I have not really seen a film that has captivated me like “Gone Baby Gone” has. (Including all of the recent award winners… I did not care for many, except for “Juno”, which was passable.)

Ben Affleck's first foray into directing hits audiences with a richly layered, compelling, and morally complex drama.  The film tells the pitch-black tale of a missing girl and the highly principled street investigator, Patrick Kenzie (played by Casey Affleck), who doggedly works the case….be prepared for a nice twist.

This film (it is rare when I can call a movie a “Film”) made me ponder the pros and cons of how society deals with the issues depicted in this film…that is a rarity.

Loved it.

"The Lives of Others"

The Lives of Others is most certainly a well-deserved Academy Award Winner for Best Foreign Language Film. I not only found it to be very informative (Communist East Germany in the 80s), but also captivating. The film opens in 1984 in East Berlin, where we see Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Mühe), a captain with the East German secret police, teaching a class in extreme interrogation techniques.

The real intrigue begins when Wiesler is assigned to bug and monitor the apartment of successful writer, Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch), and his girlfriend, a famous stage actress. Let the suspense and intrigue begin……. Duncan Hamilton

"Bobby"
Directed by Emilo Estevez
"Wow, I must admit after all my years in the video industry I have yet to write a film review, so here goes nothing...well, something, when talking about the film "Bobby". Directed by Emilo Estevez (son of Martin Sheen), "Bobby" revisits the night when Robert F. Kennedy was shot and killed at the Ambassador Hotel on June 4th, 1968. With an incredible cast too numerous to mention, the film portrays the lives of 22 fictional characters who are all at the Ambassador Hotel on that significant day. With the seamless blending of historical and new footage, I found this film to be both informative and entertaining. I think all will enjoy." ...Duncan Hamilton
