Annual Film Awards

29th Genie Award Winners
Genie Awards - On April 11, 1979, the now late actor/director Al Waxman announced the formation of the Academy of Canadian Cinema. The founding members served energetically on various working committees. Criteria for membership was established, regulations and voting procedures were approved, the legalities of the new organization were worked out, and the Academy of Canadian Cinema received its first official incorporation on June 20, 1979.

For over 25 years, the Academy has continued to dedicate itself to Canadian film and television. Its mandate is to honour outstanding achievements; to heighten public awareness, increase audience attendance and appreciation of Canadian film and television productions, and to encourage the highest standards of film and television production in Canada.

The Genie Awards are awarded annually to celebrate and recognize the best in Canadian film.

81st Academy Award Winners

Academy Awards “Oscars” - Since 1929, the Academy Awards have been presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. One of the highest filmmaking honours in the industry, the winners receive an Oscar Award for their achievements.

All voting for Academy Awards is conducted by secret ballot and tabulated by the international auditing firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers. Secrecy is maintained by the auditors and the results of balloting are not revealed until opened on stage during the live television program. Because the Academy numbers among its members the ablest artists and craftsmen in the motion picture world, the Oscar represents the highest achievement of the year.

Each year HFPA members interview more than 250 actors, directors, writers, and producers, as well as reporting from film sets and seeing more than 300 films. Every year, members vote in December in several categories for films produced in the current year (with the awards being presented in January).
